Manifesto

After looking back over my sketchbooks and drawings that I have made over the past few years I have found that I have two clear interests. They are animal drawings, and people's daily lives.

Currently, I really like drawing animals. I find myself doing it without realising, and when I am experimenting with a brief I normally find myself coming up with outcomes involving animals. However, I know some people can appreciate these drawings, but I think that a large collection of animal drawings (however beautiful they may be) would seem boring. I want to continue drawing animals but in such a way that other people will find amusing or interesting.

My interest in people lies in everyday things that we all do, and the little habits we have. I have always liked the stories people tell me about the things they find embarrassing about families, the sleazy drunk people met on the street at 2am, and the little white lies they've told others. They are the small things that happen in everyone's daily lives. I think it is a good starting place for illustrations, as it makes drawings instantly relatable. I want to pick up on the details that we all do, and the events that have probably happened to all of us, but don't always acknowledge as part of our daily lives. I find this interesting as when I see work that I think relates to me I always feel more connected with it. I also want work that people could connect with universally, and makes the audience more aware of the things that they do everyday. Ideally I would want people to look at my work and laugh to themselves because at some point during their life the exact same thing has happened to them.

I would like to combine drawings of animals with what we do in our daily lives. Ideally, I would like to create light hearted and funny drawings with animals in human situations. I would like to do this because I think that there can never be enough art to make people smile, and just for the sake of nonsense. I think this project would be better aimed at adults, as they have had more past experiences to draw inspiration from.

I will experiment with this by first collecting sketches of people out and about, getting along with their daily lives. I will also need to make some study drawings to improve my skill of drawing people. I also need to collect life drawing sketches of animals. I then need to collect and note down stories and experiences of people to inspire me. I will then work on combining the two ideas.
I have always been really interested in stories and narratives so I like the idea of turning my ideas into some sort of fictional story or an animation.

My objectives for this project would be to create work that makes people smile, create work that is relatable, is aimed at adults, and to improve my life drawing and observational drawing.
